African trade ministers adopt legal instruments to establish the African Continental Free Trade Area
March 12, 2018 - The fifth meeting of African Union Ministers of Trade (AMOT) chaired by the Minister of Trade and Investment of Nigeria, the Honourable Okechukwu Enelamah has adopted the legal instruments constituting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) namely the Agreement Establishing the AfCFTA, the Protocol on Trade in Goods, the Protocol on Trade in Services and the Protocol on Rules and Procedures for the Settlement of Disputes. ECOWAS Member States to Agree on Regional Investment Climate Scorecard to Unlock Investment in West Africa
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the World Bank Group will co-host the ECOWAS Investment Climate Scorecard Roundtable in Lagos, Nigeria from June 13-14, under the European funded Improved Business and Investment Climate in West Africa Project. The Project seeks to address a range of investment policy issues that constitute barriers for the private sector to invest efficiently across the region. READ MORE
AGOA Training at the Chamber of Commerce
On December 7, and in cooperation with the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Mohamed Abou iiana, the Trade Hub’s Senior AGOA specialist, conducted an AGOA promotion workshop for more than 30 participants (pictured at left) representing businesses, the private sector, art and crafts producers, agriculture development agencies, SMEs, exporters, and horticulture producers. Dr. Abou iiana led an interactive discussion on AGOA benefits, rules of origin, value addition, certificate of origin, documentation required to export, and market information with the trainees. U.S. House of Representatives Passes AGOA and MCA Modernization Act
Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the House Africa Subcommittee, applauded the passage of the African Growth & Opportunity Act (AGOA) and Millennium Challenge Act (MCA) Modernization Act, which passed by a unanimous voice vote on the House Floor. The bill, introduced by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.), will make AGOA more effective by directing the President to establish a website with information regarding AGOA and by encouraging embassies in chosen countries promote export opportunities to the United States. A Message from LRA Regarding Abrupt Changes in the Exchange Rate
The LRA has listened to concerns from the Business community from several stakeholder meetings regarding abrupt changes in the exchange rate. Considering the impact it may have on the payment process, they have taken the following steps:

Changes to the exchange rate that will affect the following business day will be made any time between 6PM to 8PM of the previous day

The official exchange rate for payment of taxes will always be published on the official LRA website for public reference

Once published on the website, the new rate will be simultaneously uploaded in the ASYCUDA before the start of business day

Taxpayers are encouraged to visit the LRA official website (www.lra.gov.lr) to obtain exchange rate information for tax purposes.

The one week exercise is primarily aimed at expanding the on-going Compliant Trader Program introduced by the LRA more than a year ago. The team is under strict instructions to deal directly with senior managers and/or owners of businesses. It will be in the interest of all to give the team your kind attention in order to assist you on how be in compliance with all your Customs and Tax obligations. As the team will share with you, there is certainly a good reward for voluntary compliance i.e., expeditious clearance and more.
LCC Welcomes New US Economic Officer
Monrovia, Liberia - The Liberia Chamber of Commerce President, Mr. Charles Ananaba welcomed Ms. Colette Clark, the new Economic Officer at the US Embassy today. Ms. Clark, accompanied by Mr. Alusine M. Sherriff will replace Ms. Lilieth R. Whyte. Ms. Clark’s office is responsible for providing information to American companies and potential investors on general business environments and opportunities in Liberia.
The Liberia Chamber of Commerce currently works with the economic & commercial section of the Embassy (through USAID West Africa Trade Hub) to promote the African Growth & Opportunity Act (AGOA). Ms. Clark reconfirmed her officer will continue to work on more trade shows.

On behalf of the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, we are pleased to announce the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Trade Resource Center (ATRC). The ATRC, located at the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, is a one-stop shop for local export-oriented companies to learn about regional and international trade opportunities, particularly those available under AGOA, a tariff preference program enacted by the U.S. Congress in 2000 to increase exports from eligible sub-Saharan African countries.
